9ers
What is Niners Golf?
The Niners is a 9-hole tournament that takes place most Tuesday afternoons after the Tuesday morning men’s tournament has cleared the front nine.
Our first group tees off at noon and we are usually all out on the front nine by 12:30. Since the morning men’s tournament is still finishing up the back nine and coming onto hole # 9, we play hole # 10 as our last hole. Depending on how many groups we send out, we are usually finished between 2:00 and 2:30 PM.
What does it cost?
Since we only play nine holes, we only charge half the prize fee of the men’s and women’s tournaments, i.e. $1, and our prizes are correspondingly smaller (usually $3 or $4 for first place).
All the fees get paid out in prizes, and roughly half the people playing end up in the money each week. We also pay $1 for chip-ins.
We currently don’t have a hole in one pool, since there has only been one ace in the last three years.
Do I need to be on a team?
Unlike the men’s and women’s tournaments, Niners doesn’t have fixed teams, and the groups are mixed. If couples or friends want to play together, we can always accommodate it. However, if you are new to Ocean Hills and haven’t met anyone to golf with yet, we will fit you into one of our groups and it is a good way to meet people.
The groups are not divided into flights by handicap because Niners doesn’t have enough players. We ask players to arrive by 11:45 to collect fees, distribute winnings and organize groups.
Do I need a handicap?
If you have already established an OHGC handicap, then we can use that to give you a Niners handicap. The average Niners golfer is a single bogey golfer, and currently the lowest handicap we have for the front nine is a seven. If you haven’t established an OH handicap yet, we start you off with a nine and adjust it after you’ve played five rounds with us.
Niners carries its own handicaps for golfers who play regularly with us.
If you are new to OHGC and trying to establish a handicap, it is possible to play the front nine with Niners, keep a duplicate scorecard, and finish the back nine to get a complete game to turn in. If you let us know you are trying to establish a handicap, we can put you in a group with someone who is interested in playing 18 holes that day.
Almost all the games we play are some version of individual low net that can be used to establish a handicap.
What games do we play?
Niners play five games in the following order: Individual low net, Hate it (the score for your worst hole is thrown out), One Blind Mouse (the score for one hole is thrown out, picked at random by the computer), Odd holes, and OTS (the score for holes 1,2.3.6 & 7count).
For variety, every couple of months we play a game with just 3 clubs & a putter and we play a two-person scramble.
